Lawson Cypress (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana) is a species of conifer in the genus Chamaecyparis. It is native to Northern California and southern Oregon where the Klamath Mountains reside. They can grow anywhere from sea level up to 1,500 m (4,900 ft) in the Klamath Mountains valleys, often along streams. The tree is called Port Orford cedar in its native region. (Source: Wikipedia)
Lawson’s cypress was discovered almost by accident in California after a botanist mysteriously disappeared on a seed hunting expedition. From this inauspicious start this tree has become one of Britain’s most popular garden conifers. (Source: Kew Gardens, see below for link)
